The Disability Services Office (DSO) provides students with confidential advising and accommodation services in order to allow students with physical, mental, and learning disabilities to successfully complete their course of study at Rutgers University – Camden. The DSO provides for the confidential documentation and verification of student accommodations, and communicates with faculty regarding disabilities and accommodations. The DSO provides accommodation services, which can include readers, interpreters, alternate text, special equipment, and note takers. The DSO acts as a signatory for special waivers. The DSO also works with students, faculty, staff and administrators to enforce the American with Disabilities Act of 1990.
How Do I Request Accommodations?
1. The student must contact the Disability Services Office and speak with the Coordinator (856-225-6442) in order to request services.
2. The student must provide the Coordinator with the appropriate documentation in support of his/her accommodation request. Below is a list of the general disability categories, along with the type of documentation required for each:
- Learning Disabilities
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Psychological/Psychiatric Disabilities
- Physical Disabilities
- On-Campus Housing
- On-Campus Parking and Transportation
The coordinator will assist the student in determining what type of documentation is necessary.
3. The Coordinator will forward the documentation to the appropriate Disability Documentation Review Committee. Once the review is complete, the Coordinator will contact the student to inform him/her of any accommodations for which he/she was approved. If accommodations are denied, the Coordinator will explain why and what can be done to support those interests.
4. Before the start of each term, it is the responsibility of the student to inform his/her Coordinator of the classes s/he is taking so the Coordinator can produce notices for faculty which identifies specific accommodations, or raises awareness in regard to a condition which may require special attention. The student is responsible for promptly providing the notice to his/her professors. Students must obtain faculty notices each term of enrollment and promptly provide them to their instructors at the start of each term. Instructors are not obligated to provide any accommodations which are not presented in the notice to faculty.
